From Pottstown, PA, Bob graduated from West Chester University and completed both his masters and doctorate degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Faculty positions at the University of Notre Dame and DePaul University (Chicago) were followed by his appointment in 1972 as the first Director of Health Promotion at Penn State where he helped pioneer the concept of peer health education.
In 1977 he was hired by Medical Education Programs in Westport, CT, a medical publishing start-up company where he developed the continuing medical education product called “Clinical Teachings”. Following a brief tenure as sales manager for WRSC radio in State College, PA, Bob returned to Penn State in 1981. In 1983 he was hired by the University of Arkansas and recognized as the first professionally trained health educator in the country to serve as the director of a major university student health service program. In 1987 he was appointed Director of University Health Services at The University of Texas at Austin and left the program in good hands following completion of a 175,000 sq. ft. comprehensive student services facility that included counseling and health services.
He experienced a brief hiatus from higher education when he joined Collegiate Health Care, an outsourcing company based in Norwalk, CT … the first company of its kind designed to upgrade the quality of health care services for college students.
From 1999 to 2006 Bob served as Director of Health Services at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, followed by his fourth major position of leadership as Director of Health Services at the University of Central Florida where he retired June 2011.
Career highlights include: 1990 President, American College Health Association; 1992 West Chester University Distinguished Alumnus; 2005 ACHA’s prestigious Edward Hitchcock Award for contributions to college health; 2011 ACHA’s highest recognition, the “Lifetime Achievement Award”; and, fall, 2011 induction into the Sturzebecker Hall of Fame at West Chester University. Bob is a contributing author to several text books and has served as a consultant to over 50 colleges and universities.
