The American College Health Association (ACHA) vehemently opposes recent actions taken by the Trump Administration, through regulation, to roll back gender-based discrimination protections in the Affordable Care Act. Health care services should be made universal to all and should not discriminate in any way, whether this be on age; race/ethnicity, sex; sexual orientation; gender (including gender identity); marital status; physical size; religious, spiritual or cultural identity; psychological/physical/learning disability; socioeconomic status; or veteran status. This is consistent with the long-held values of cultural inclusion, respect, and equality that ACHA has advocated for. This move by the administration also runs counter to the recent ruling by the Supreme Court that affirmed that the Federal Civil Rights Laws protect LGBTQ+ workers from discrimination.
ACHA stands firm in our commitment to social justice, human dignity, and respect for all and recently reaffirmed its commitment to these core values. In February of this year, ACHA stated its opposition to any legislation or regulation that would seek to create barriers to transgender care.
ACHA will continue to be a leading voice for action and advocacy to prioritize nondiscrimination protections for all LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff and encourages its member institutions to reach out to students, faculty and staff to reiterate your college’s nondiscrimination policies and practices. Creating safe access to affirming, inclusive, quality health care must be the standard of care.
