Saint Mary's College Back-to-School Lottery

I served as a community advocacy and health partner to the SMC Department of Mission and MInistry and a Saint Mary's College student, and Interfaith Youth Core Faith in the Vaccine Ambassador grant recipient, William Haering (class of 2022). He created a COVID-19 vaccine lottery for students who successfully submitted required COVID-19 documentation in preparation for the 2021-2022 academic year. He based his programming on California's successful Vax for the Win Lottery incentive program of 2021. His aimed to incentivize completing a college health requirement in a fun and timely manner. Will created graphics to announce his vaccine lottery incentive program via Instagram, College webpages and by word of mouth. Will consulted with an established Marketing Strategist as he crafted his advertisement design and message. He independently secured prizes for students which included 3 group pizza parties, priority student class registration for spring 2022 term and 25 generous technology bundle prizes.

Prior to beginning his work on the St Mary's College campus, Will attended an IFYC orientation where participants learned about the vaccine and messaging techniques. Several hundred Ambassadors worked on COVID-19 vaccine messaging this past summer nationally through IFYC.

Advertising for this incentive program was released in the final 5 days of the document upload window which spanned the entire month of July 2021. His program ran for 18% of the days of July 2021, but impressively 38% of COVID-19 vaccination portal uploads occurred during his incentive program. This indicates that this incentive helped with the College's COVID-19 portal submission compliance.

The ask is to "Vaccinate for community health." The target audience is all undergraduate and graduate students of the college who plan to come to campus fall of 2021. Another goal was to encourage vaccine hesitant students to contribute to community health by obtaining their vaccine and participating in the fun lottery where they could win prizes.
