Opening General Session, June 1

Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD, international authority and researcher on mood disorders and the author of several best-selling books, was this year’s Opening General Session keynote speaker. In her address, "Depression and Bipolar Disorders in College Students," Dr Jamison discussed clinical characteristics of and treatments for depression and bipolar disorders. She also described the challenges faced by college students with mental illnesses, such as stigma, lack of adequate mental health facilities, and lack of awareness of symptoms of depression and its treatment. Dr. Jamison emphasized the importance of access to care for students with mental illnesses. Her address was well-received by the enthusiastic crowd.

Prior to Dr. Jamison’s presentation, President of ACHA Alan I. Glass thanked the many volunteer members of ACHA who work behind the scenes to help the association and its members advance the health of all students and the campus community.

Dorosin Memorial Lecture, June 3

The 2011 Dorosin Memorial Lecture was delivered Alison Malmon, founder and executive director of Active Minds, an organization that empowers students to use their voices to change the perception of mental health. She spoke about how changing the way students approach mental health involves changing the entire conversation about the issues on our campuses.

Presidential Session, June 4

On the last day of the meeting, Presidential Session speaker Abby Rincón, MPH, Director of Diversity at the University of California-Berkeley School of Public Health and recipient of the 1998 Miguel Garcia-Tunon Memorial Award in Human Dignity from ACHA, shared important diversity and human rights perspectives. In her session, "Anti-Immigrant Backlash: A Pressing Human Rights Issue for College Health Professionals," Ms. Rincón discussed how the daily struggles of undocumented youth and their families go mostly unnoticed; she also framed historical and current day immigration issues and struggles, shed light on how the situation in Arizona affects the health of students, and outlined how college health professionals can better understand and take leadership of one of the most pressing human rights issues of our times.

Diversity Reception, June 1

Once again the Diversity Reception was a huge hit with attendees! The Diversity Reception was a fun and informal event at which attendees were encouraged to mingle with people they didn’t know and relax after a day of sessions. Games, arts and crafts, and other activities were available for attendees. At the Wii™ gaming station, people got to show off their moves when playing "Just Dance," and others sat down with their colleagues for a game of Scattergories™. Also very popular was the photo frame decorating station, where guests could have their photo taken and printed and then decorate their own frame. This station was so popular it stayed open after the reception ended. Also featured was a short address by Rebecca Allison, MD, president of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA). The Diversity Reception was co-hosted by the Ethnic Diversity Coalition and the Allies for LGBT Health Coalition.

Exhibit Hall, June 2-3

This year’s Exhibit Hall was packed with more than 85 exhibitors on hand. The exhibitors were thrilled with the amount of traffic they saw in the hall and how enthusiastic the attendees were. Activities in the Exhibit Hall commenced with the Opening Breakfast on Thursday morning and wrapped up on Friday afternoon. There was rarely a quiet moment in the hall as a steady stream of attendees made their way from booth to booth, inquiring about products and services and meeting with representatives from companies and nonprofit organizations.
