Opening General Session, June 2

The Opening General Session featured Heather Munro Prescott, PhD, professor of history at Central Connecticut State University, as the keynote speaker. In her address "Student Bodies, Past and Present," Dr. Prescott presented a historical account of how college health has evolved over time to address the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. She recounted how college and university health programs evolved in conjunction with shifting standards of medical care and public health practices in the United States. In another aspect of the presentation, Dr. Prescott conveyed how the history of college health is intertwined with the history of diversity in higher education, explaining that the growth of health services was one way in which colleges and universities made higher education accessible to women, racial minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities.

Just prior to the keynote address, then-President Jim Turner presented the ACHA Presidential Citation to Anne Schuchat, MD (RADM, USPHS), Assistant Surgeon General, United States Public Health Service, and Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD). Dr. Schuchat's work as a leader in the nation's premier public health agency intersects directly with the association's national efforts to prevent and control infectious diseases on college campuses nationwide.

Diversity Reception, June 2

Attendees were able to let loose at this year’s Diversity Reception, where games, arts and crafts, and other activities were available for attendees. The Diversity Reception, which took place Wednesday, June 2, was a fun event at which attendees were encouraged to mingle with people they didn’t know and relax after a day of sessions. The camaraderie at the event was impressive and attendees enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Some of the most popular attractions included the “BEAD Yourself” station at which participants selected colored beads to represent who they are, and the Wii™ gaming station, where people challenged their colleagues to games of virtual bowling and tennis. This reception was co-hosted by the Ethnic Diversity Coalition and the Allies for LGBT Health Coalition.

Exhibit Hall, June 3-4

This year’s Exhibit Hall was packed with nearly 100 exhibitors on hand. The exhibitors were thrilled with the amount of traffic they saw in the hall and how enthusiastic the attendees were. Activities in the Exhibit Hall commenced with the Opening Breakfast on Thursday morning and wrapped up on Friday afternoon. There was rarely a quiet moment in the hall as a steady stream of attendees made their way from booth to booth, inquiring about products and services and meeting with representatives from companies and nonprofit organizations. See the list of 2010 Exhibitors.
