Lillian Zanchi, RNC
2004 NECHA President's Award Recipient

For the 26 years you served as staff nurse at the Cutler Health Center, your wisdom, compassion, and integrity have defined the very foundation of college health at the University of Maine. In taking a holistic approach to the well being of students, you attend to all of their needs -- often physical, sometimes psychosocial, and on occasion maternal. Your warm and caring nature, combined with professional integrity and clinical acumen, have provided comfort to many.

First and foremost, your focus is on student wellness. As the challenges of student health have increased over the years, so has your unwavering commitment to those in need. You are the prime example that it is possible, in the world of downsized college health care, to provide excellent care -- never treating "just" an illness or injury, always caring for the person.

A gifted clinician, you are described as having a "sixth sense," using both knowledge and experience to understand everything from "sniffles" to deeper problems and complex medical issues. Your interest and expertise in nutritional counseling and eating disorders have directly benefited countless students. You are a source of inspiration to both staff and students. This is especially true for the university's nursing students, who have been well mentored by you.

The New England College Health Association is proud to commemorate all of your good work and outstanding service with this award. Your expertise, grace and dedication to the community have not gone unnoticed. Along with this citation comes great respect, gratitude, and affection - along with our best wishes for a happy retirement!
