Mary Kay Connell, BS, CPNP
2005 Louise Gazzara Award Recipient
In over two decades as Director of Health Services at Salve Regina University you have been a part of countless changes in the field of college health. Embracing challenges and opportunities equally, your clinical acumen and vast knowledge and expertise, coupled with endless energy and enthusiasm, has been a beacon that shines far beyond Salve Regina's campus.
As a nurse practitioner, you "practice" both the art and science of responding to the health care needs of students and the wider community. You have initiated programs in many areas that have had a significant impact on fostering a healthy and safe environment, one that optimizes student learning and growth. You lead by example in the sensitivity, compassion and kindness you demonstrate in understanding the needs of students and staff.
Your guidance has led many to name you as a role model. Your supervisory skills identify and build upon people's strengths while gently addressing their weaknesses. The inclusiveness and transparency you bring to solving problems encourages dialogue and the selfless act of giving one's best effort regardless of the circumstances.
As a founding member of the Tri-State College Health Consortium, you played a pivotal role in health care legislation that recognizes the uniqueness of college students. Your willingness to share resources, information and networking opportunities has enhanced the connections both within college health and with external constituencies such as the Rhode Island Department of Health and Newport Hospital.
The New England College Health Association honors you with this award, in recognition of your pioneering work in college health - as supportive mentor, trusted colleague, and exemplary leader. You represent the "gold standard" of the success of the nurse practitioner director in college health. Congratulations on this most deserved honor.
