Attributes of the NECHA President’s Award recipients include creativity, innovation and dedication. They are known in their community and to others in college health for their caring and sharing. Upon Peter’s arrival at UVM in 1988, the tradition and importance of volunteerism and participation in college health both regionally and nationally was firmly in place. Former UVM Director of Health Services Bill Christmas served as ACHA President and was a long-time ACHA Foundation member. Phoebe Clark, former Nursing Supervisor, served as NECHA President. Peter joined ACHA and NECHA in 1989 and has served NECHA since 1999 as at-large Board member, President-elect, and President. By participating in NECHA poster sessions, presenting at annual meetings, contributing regularly to NECHA News, and actively participating in the college health list-serve, he has shared his clinical and administrative knowledge with the larger college health family.
At UVM Peter served on the Campus Task Force for the Reorganization of Health Services in 1993-94, and served on a leadership team during transitional years before the present Center for Health and Wellbeing was organized under the leadership of Dr. Jon Porter and Estelle Maartmann-Moe. He has been an important link with the UVM College of Medicine and has organized medical school resident and student rotations in the health service.
Peter has served as Chair of UVM’s Quality Improvement Committee and has participated on numerous search committees. In the health center’s medical clinic, he provides annual instruction in sessions for skills review, including OSHA-mandated training. He coordinates the University’s role as a Sentinel Physician Site, in cooperation with CDC’s Influenza Surveillance Network. Since he began his work at UVM, Peter has directed the health center’s laboratory and currently serves on a campus-wide task force exploring men’s health initiatives.
This year Peter organized a grand rounds speaker series open to all college health professionals in Vermont with the goal of bringing experts in clinical and mental health fields to UVM to present topics of relevance to the field of college health.
“Peter has a great deal of compassion for the practice of medicine, particularly as it relates to college students and their community. His personal, academic, and clinical commitment to college health is an inspiration to us all.”
The New England College Health Association is proud to commemorate the fine work and outstanding service of Peter Nobes.
