PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Cases of primary syphilis were seen on a number of U.S. campuses during the 2007-08 academic year. Because we have not seen these in many years, clinicians in college health could benefit from this update from the Centers for Disease Control. This presentation will elucidate current epidemiology of syphilis infections in the U.S. It will update the learner on current methods for screening and diagnosis of infection. It will highlight updated treatment protocols. Actual cases from college health will be used to focus discussion.

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This educational activity is designed for administrators; physicians and physician assistants; nurses and nurse practitioners; psychologists, counselors and social workers; health educators; pharmacists; and students.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the current epidemiology of syphilis infection in the U.S.
  2. Define stages of syphilis infection.
  3. Identify current lab tests used for diagnosis of infection.
