Pre-Conference Workshops
Tuesday, June 1, 1:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.

In response to popular demand, a limited number of pre-conference workshops will be offered at the Annual Meeting. Pre-conference workshops differ from the 90-minute concurrent sessions in that they are intended to help participants enhance specific skill sets or train to acquire specific competencies appropriate to practice in their discipline. See the Preliminary Program (pdf) for available continuing education/contact hours. The fee to attend a pre-conference workshop will be $50. Preregistration is mandatory and tickets will be available for purchase when you register.

A Primer to Conducting Research in College Health Workshop

Sherry Darrow, PhD (State University of New York–Buffalo) and Jane Jue, MD (University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine)
This interactive workshop will review basics of how to design and conduct research. It is intended to provide college health professionals in all disciplines with the basic steps to implement research on individual campuses as well as collaborative projects within and across multiple institutions.

Brief Interventions During Busy Student Health Visits: Applying Motivational Interviewing Skills and Strategies
Paul Grossberg, MD (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Jason Kilmer, PhD University of Washington)
College students’ resistance to changing drinking and other risky behaviors challenges health providers to weave effective conversations about behavioral risk reduction into otherwise busy student visits. Workshop participants will learn principles of motivational interviewing, rehearse strategies to respond to resistance and ambivalence, practice with a new Virtual Reality simulation and acquire a “toolbox” of strategies to use with students.

Campus Safety: Reshaping the Role of College Health
Donna Barry, RN, MSN, APN, FN-CSA (Montclair State University) and Ryan Aker, PhD (Mississippi State University)
This pre-conference workshop is a collaborative effort between ACHA's Campus Violence Coalition and NASPA's Campus Safety Knowledge Coalition. A variety of campus professionals will review steps in preparing and responding to threats that impact the safety of campuses. The workshop agenda incorporates lecture and panel discussion, and includes emergency management concepts, public health incidents, disasters, legislative updates, psychological first aid, and use of behavioral assessment teams.

Maximizing Your Leadership Potential: Going from Theory to Practice
Bernard Brogan, PhD (Widener University)
In this workshop, participants will learn about the most influential leadership theories and how to apply those theories in practical ways to enhance their skills as managers and directors. Through lecture, video clips, case studies, and group interaction, participants will build their skills in leading, motivating, and holding staff accountable for achieving their organization’s goals.

Primary and Advanced Wound Closure Workshop
James Davis, MD (Utah State University) and James Jacobs, MD, PhD, FACEP (The Ohio State University)
This review of primary and advanced wound closure methods is of interest for all clinicians treating acute lacerations and wounds. It includes a hands-on practical skills laboratory offering individual experience with common wound closure materials and techniques.
